LGBTQIA+: The Definition of Identifying as Queer

Social norms and customs have changed quite a few times throughout the centuries. A few examples include gender roles, family dynamics, interracial marriage, and many others. In the late 1980s, the initialism of LGBT became the term for our community to help and support one another to fight against discrimination, persecution, and hate for just embracing and celebrating who we are. Throughout the years, LGBT has evolved to become LGBTQIA+ because our family recognizes the vast identities that make each one of us unique. Today, we will talk about our beloved family members who identify as queer, a term that was historically used (and unfortunately to this day) to hurt and segregate.  

We Know That Q in LGBTQIA+ Refers to Queer, But What Does Queer Mean? 

Identities are truly personal and it can get a little complex when it comes to how you feel about yourself and how you feel toward others as outdated notions of gender and sexuality are contributing factors. Queer is an umbrella term to describe someone other than heterosexual or cisgender, but it can also mean a lot of other things. It is a term that is filled with emotions and meanings, aspects that make you and your beloved one-of-a-kind. Being queer is not exclusive to one definition. Being queer or identifying as queer means acceptance, inclusivity, and love.

Whether you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, or any other identity, one thing is for certain. We must continue our fight for freedom and equal human rights.
