A Complaint Against Love 😯😢
When someone talks about the state of Florida, the first thing that likely comes to mind is the city of Miami, and with good reason. The city is known to be one of the world’s top LGBTQIA+ meccas, attracting millions of visitors each year. Miami is also one of the few cities in the nation that has its own LGBT chamber of commerce along with Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Tampa Bay.
A Not So Accepting Past That is Rearing Its Head Again in the 21st Century
Despite the significant progress made toward initiatives that support and protect our community, Florida is known for a not-so-accepting LGBT past that began in the 1900s, particularly in the 1950s. Fast-forwarding to the 21st century, a century that allows us to seamlessly connect with anyone around the world at any time, seems to have instead, divided us even more as a society. The rise in the disconnection from humanity; the loss of acceptance, compassion, and love for one another sets a dangerous precedence in the modern world, exposing future generations to grave consequences as a result of the detachment.

With extreme polarization in today’s politics and society, a particular video has become the center of attention in the continued fight against discrimination and selective enforcement. In it, a lovely little girl is accompanied by a beautiful drag queen, parading as only drag queens know how to do, with fire. Hand-in-hand, they walk together to show acceptance, love, support, and pride. Unfortunately, but to no surprise, the video sparked a whirlwind of negative comments that led to a complaint filed by Florida Gov. DeSantis against the host establishment, accusing the restaurant of disorderly conduct. The establishment’s liquor license may be revoked if the complaint is successful.
What It Means for the Community and What You Can Do
For us, what transpired in the video was adorable and innocent. There wasn’t anything wrong with it, nothing wrong with showing pride, nothing wrong with holding a child’s hand to provide a foundation of confidence and love. But, here we are, our global rainbow family is once again lambasted, stigmatized, and to what end? We must stand together and unite, more than ever, to raise our voices, and be heard. We will stand our ground because we choose to love and we choose to be loved. We choose love.
